10 Ways to be a Good Woman Boss

Throughout my professional life, I’ve had my fair share of run ins with women leaders/bosses/business owners. Some of them were awesome and some of them may or may not be what many may think of as stereotypical women business owner. I will admit that at one point I may of even sworn off working for another woman boss. Why is that? Why does that stereotype even exist? Is it hypocritical that there’s a “female boss” negative connotation?

I feel like the reason women bosses are the WORST (some of the time) is they’re constantly feeling the need to prove themselves. They work harder and seek perfection more than their male counterparts. They are called certain names because…well… sometimes they are acting that way but I feel like a lot of the time it’s more that they are a product of the circumstances they perceive

Now, I'm a woman business owner and so now that I'm in this position, the irony is not lost on me. I don't want to be the stereotype, I want to be intentional about learning from the women leaders in my past who showed me what to do... and not do.

How to not be a “typical” women business owner:

  1. DO NOT Micromanage

  2. DO NOT Bring personal life into your work

  3. DO NOT work 80 hrs week doing work your staff was hired to do

  4. DO NOT share the issues you’re having with a colleague/employee to others who are not a part of management

  5. DO Have realistic expectations of your staff

  6. DO Communicate those expectations

  7. DO Recognize other people’s strengths and successes

  8. DO Play to your own strengths

  9. DO listen to other people’s suggestions

  10. DO Set the example of what you want from your employees
