5 Ways Marketing to Clients Feels a Whole Lot Like Dating

So, is it just me or does marketing (especially when you're a soloprenuer) seem a whole heck of a lot like dating? You feel way too vulnerable as you try to convey the value of your work and when someone doesn't hire you it's hard not to take it too personally. Below is a list of five ways marketing and dating have some bizarre similarities...

1. You try to be on your BEST behavior

2. You overthink when you should follow up because you don't want to seem too needy

3. You rock the "safe" coffee for the first meeting

4. You feel successful at an event if you leave with at least three people's contact information

5. You social media stalk them to find out conversation topics and common interests

So how can we handle this? How does one put themselves out there consistently trying to stir up contacts and even possibly a new client? How can you handle when people choose to go with your competition and not take it personally? I wish I could tell you that there was an easy answer, but really, if you're there trying to talk about your business you're dealing with something that's your blood, sweat and tears... you're dealing with your future. I'm going to be honest, and say that I wish people were a bit more... well... honest with they're marketing or networking. It's the WORST when you deal with someone at a networking event or a coffee meeting and then you meet them again or mention their name and you find out who they really are. A business relationship is just like any other relationship, authenticity is vital. Can you imagine if that's how business went down?
